daycares: a mother's worse nightmare

As I get further and further into my investigation regarding childcare and daycare facilities, I am getting more and more anxious.  I came across a June 2008 Vancouver Sun article today that referenced one of the daycares that is run by the same owner that I talked to last week {she runs two daycares - Puddle Jumpers and Puddle Splashers - both located in Burnaby}.  Here is an excerpt of the article regarding Puddle Splashers:

Washroom smelled
One example of a high-risk daycare
is Puddle Splashers in north Burnaby. Inspection records show Puddle Splashers has repeatedly caused concern for inspectors
since it first opened in 2003.
During an inspection of the facility in July 2005, inspectors noted the children's washroom smelled of urine, there was no cover on the diaper pail and bolts were protruding dangerously from a tire swing.
Inspectors also raised concern about the daycare's emergency procedures, noting that files for some children did not include a doctor's phone number or parental consent for emergency care.
As well, the inspectors found there was no documentation on site instructing daycare staff in how to use the facility's EpiPen - a device used to quickly inject adrenalin into a child suffering a severe allergic reaction.
In a written statement to The Sun, Shawna Harrison, the manager at Puddle Splashers, wrote that the facility took immediate steps to address all the concerns raised by Fraser Health inspectors.
"Despite our close attention to detail, potential hazards are, from time to time, identified," she wrote. "When they are identified, we deal with them immediately."
Following the July 2005 inspection, wrote Harrison, staff were "fully trained" in using the EpiPen and she asked the school it leased its building from to investigate the washroom odours.
In November 2005, according to Fraser Health records, a staff member at Puddle Splashers was fired after an investigation found she committed physical abuse against a child by grabbing him by the arm and pulling him inside, a distance of about 45 metres.
And in late 2006, Fraser Health launched a formal investigation of Puddle Splashers after it received complaints that staff members were belittling and mimicking children in care.
The health authority's report into the matter notes that two staff members - identified only as "Staff B" and "Staff D" - were accused by one of their colleagues, "Staff A," of laughing at a child in front of the child's peers for not making sense.
Staff A told investigators she also witnessed Staff B mimicking a child with a stutter.
"Staff A stated that they witnessed a child speaking with Staff B and Staff B responded to this child with, 'What do you want?' Staff B is alleged to have said this with a stutter," the report states. "Staff A stated that they further witnessed Staff B say to this same child, 'Don't stare at me with a blank face.'"
The two staff members in question denied the allegations, but the inspector found there was enough evidence to conclude the two had belittled children and both were required to attend a training course on bullying and belittling.
In her statement to The Sun, Harrison wrote that "despite sincere and honest efforts in hiring the best staff members ... there are the rare occasion when a staff member may, unforeseeably, act in an inappropriate fashion."
Harrison added that the two staff members who belittled children in care no longer work for Puddle Splashers.
Attached to Harrison's statement were five letters from parents praising the care at Puddle Splashers.

That completely confirms my gut feeling that I got from Ms. Harrison.  As I was talking to her, she seemed uninterested and unfocused, and when she tried speaking to Lil J, it seemed forced and he completely ignored her and the daycare workers.  That's a huge sign for Lil J as he only takes to people that he feels comfortable around.

Now I understand that there are thousands of daycares and these incidents are mostly isolated, but it is up to the staff to report such incidents of physical, sexual and emotional abuse between daycare workers and kids.  So what isn't getting reported?  What is being ignored?

I'm just thankful that I'm aware of these incidents now rather than after I sign up Lil J for a daycare.

the daycare search is on!

Searching for a daycare/preschool is no easy task for a mom and definitely worse for a mom who is neurotic about where her child spends his time while she's at work {aka: ME!}.  I have been trying to find a daycare for Lil J for the past few weeks while my mother-in-law takes a month off in Jamaica.  I think it would be a good experience for Lil J to be around kids his own age so that he can learn how to interact and develop his social skills further {not like he really needs help in that department!}.

I checked out a daycare last week in our area.  Here is what happened:
  • The owner forgot about our appointment and wasn't even at the daycare.
  • The daycare workers made me wait outside for about 5 minutes in the hot sun with Lil J.  I'm guessing this was because the place was a mess.
  • I met two of the daycare workers while waiting for the owner.  One was vacuuming a stained carpet and another looked like she lived on the street {no offense, but first impressions are everything when it comes to who will be looking after my son}.  Both had no class and were loud and obnoxious.  I'm sure this makes me sound like a complete snob but, again, I only want positive influences around Lil J - to the extent that I am able to control.
  • The daycare has been in operation for 15 years.  The furniture was newer Ikea furniture that looked like they were well over 15 years old {soiled, dirty and never-been-cleaned}.  Hence the inspection report.
  • The owner seemed fake and not child-friendly at all.  She tried talking to Lil J but it seemed completely forced.
  • My gut feeling screamed "NO WAY!!".
This morning I called a daycare which is located down the street from where we live.  I was told that the staff didn't have time to check diapers all the time because there were a grand total of 8 kids that they had to look after.  *DING DING*  RED FLAGS!!  I'm curious to see how this daycare is run so I will be checking them out this Wednesday.

Even though this daycare/preschool search can be tedious, it's also been a great learning experience for me and I've accumulated a lot of valuable resources along the way.  Here are a few of them:
  • The Shorty List - This website provides parents with an anonymous way of expressing their personal opinions about daycares, preschools and elementary schools.  You can also get up-to-date information on any openings and the latest "chat" regarding childcare.
  • The Vancouver Sun's Metro Vancouver Daycare Ratings - A search engine containing information from local health authorities' own databases.  It rates daycares on a low, moderate and high scale.
  • Fraser Health Authority Inspection Reports - A very valuable resource with results of inspections of licensed childcare facilities.  It does not include detailed inspections.
Obviously I'm doing extensive {obsessive} research for the best possible daycare for my Lil J.  I found a few more options today and hopefully one of them will be successful!

dear lil j: shock & awe......but not surprising..

Dear Lil J,

It's been a while since I've written you a letter..  We've been so busy enjoying our summer together as a family and you have been having so much fun with your sister.  I notice that you are {and have been since birth} slowly taking everything in and analyzing it - trying to figure out why something happened or how something got to where it is or why something works a certain way.  You just blow my mind!

Yesterday you spent the day with Gong Gong {Grandpa} and you apparently exhausted him with all your energy!  You had a quiet moment when Gong Gong found Elmo for you on Video On Demand:

Watching Elmo!
Sometimes he finds a comfty spot on Gong Gong's stomach:

When it was time to leave Gong Gong and Po Po's {Grandma} house, you put away your train set in the box and instead of just leaving it on the table, you took it upon yourself to transport it back to the bedroom.  It wasn't the fact that you thought to put the box back in it's original place, but the fact that you thought about it and used your "noodles" and put the box on top of your little chair, and pushed the chair all the way to the room - just because the box was much too heavy for you to carry all the way to the bedroom.  Gong Gong, Po Po and Mommy watched you in awe as you were doing this - all by yourself!!

I am just so incredibly proud of you, whether you do things that surprise us every day or not.  You always seem beyond your age and I'm so happy that you are independent and can think for yourself.  So, so proud of you baby!

Love,
Mommy

{swank}review & giveaway: Stuck On You Personalized Labels

Congratulations to #31 Rod Moran - winner of the Back to School Pack from Stuck On You Canada!

Even though Lil J doesn't go to daycare or preschool yet, his stuff is always disappearing at Grandma's house - especially his cute little food containers.  I have lids but no matching containers, or containers but no matching lids.

The solution?  Stuck On You personalized labels!  They have an amazing selection of personalized labels for anything you can think of:  shoes, clothes, pencils, bags, and even labels to organize your kitchen!

Stuck On You sent me labels for both Miss S and Lil J, as well as a personalized book bag for Miss S.  The book bag was great for Miss S to tote her books, a change of clothes, and other small items.  I love that it is very sturdy and can withstand the wear and tear of young children.  Here are some images of the book bag:

I ironed on a bunch of labels to Miss S's clothing in a hurry before she went off for the weekend with my sister-in-law and they stuck on beautifully.  One of the labels did start to peel off a pair of her jeggings after a few days, but that was because I didn't iron them on for the recommended ten seconds.  I also put a few on her pencils and pens and will be using them on her school supplies for the upcoming school year.

For Lil J, I tested out Stuck On You's shoe labels on two pairs of his frequently worn shoes.  Approximately a month later and they still look brand new despite Daddy G's insistence that the labels would slide right off from Lil J's sweaty feet.  The shoe labels come with a plastic protector that goes right over the label itself to prevent the labels from peeling off due to sweat, etc.

I also used labels on Lil J's food containers which will hopefully prevent them from disappearing in Grandma's never-ending cupboards.

Stuck on You has the perfect pack to help start the school year right, all at an amazing value.  The Back to School Bonus Pack includes 25 fabulous Name Labels from the new Designer collection, a BPA free stainless steel drink bottle and a "cool" kids lunch bag - all personalized with your child's name.  Only $49.95 {a $70.85 value}!

Stuck on You is kindly offering a 10% discount off your entire purchase from August 23 - September 5, 2011.  Use promo code swankmama.

the testing two's: flying objects

Every time I tell a person how old Lil J is, I get the same response: "Oh, the terrible two's!".  While I don't think Lil J has reached the full blown "terrible two's" yet, I can tell that he is constantly trying to test my husband and I, and constantly trying to see where his boundaries lie.

His new thing is throwing every object in his path.  It started out with playful throwing - like passing a ball back and forth, etc.  Now, it seems every time he gets frustrated or is playing with his sister and older cousins, he throws any object within arms reach.  I try to catch him every time he does it, but he thinks it's a game and a minute later he's back to throwing things again.  I know that this is just another phase and that he is most likely trying to see when he can get away with it, but it can be very frustrating.

What happened to my mellow, calm kid?  Where did he go?  It seems he was replaced by a jumping, climbing, non-stop energy kid that is on a constant sugar-high {even though Lil J doesn't eat sweets}.

Ahhhh, so I guess the "terrible two's" are starting.  Or, as I like to call it, the "testing two's"!

When I first started hosting giveaways about a month ago, I thought it would immediately drive traffic to my blog.  I was wrong!  Having your own blog, Facebook page and Twitter account to promote your giveaways is not sufficient enough.  So, I decided to check into "linky" sites that everyone posts about on Twitter and discovered that it was a fantastic way of promoting your giveaways AND checking out other blogger's giveaways.

So don't be shy and come link up!  I'll host a giveaway linky every Monday that will stay open until Friday of that week.

i'm tired

Here is a look into my usual daily routine after work:
  • Come home
  • Find multiple lights on {even if it's sunny outside}
  • Find the daily newspaper on the stairs
  • Find pieces of used paper towel all over the counters and floors {courtesy of Daddy G}
  • Empty pop cans and water bottles on various counters, bedrooms, and occassionally the bathroom {also courtesy of Daddy G}.  Sure the containers are usually rinsed out, but would it kill you to take the extra step and put it in the recycling bag a couple steps away?  Hmmmm?
  • Why is the bathroom light on?
  • Find the toilet seat up.  Not the part that the guys use but the actual lid.  That bugs me.
  • Find the both kitchen sinks filled with dirty dishes even though I may {or may not have} cleaned and emptied out the sink the night before
  • Toys EVERYWHERE
  • Miss S' random things strewn everywhere
Sometimes my hubby will come home early or even take the day off, and the house still looks like this when I get home.  I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he does pull his weight around the house and cook and clean but it does not happen on a daily basis.

And this non-domestic Mama is TIRED when she gets home from work.  I don't like to cook.  I don't like to clean.  But I do it anyways because it has to be done.  Why can't my hubby get that through his thick head?  And pick up after himself for once and stop blaming the mess on me.

Ugh.

Think about how I feel when we have random visitors over in the evening.

Okay, I'm not saying I'm perfectly clean in any way.  I'm far from being a neat-freak.  Our room is a total disaster right now too but I'm blaming lack of space and storage space on that one.  Plus, I'm working on it!

Ladies:  Does any of this sound familiar?

mommy guilt

Being a mom is hard enough.  Being a working mom is even harder.  I have it pretty easy in terms of having hassle-free childcare {my mother-in-law} and a husband who has flexible work hours.  Not to mention, my brother just moved into our basement suite {another built-in} and my parents are just a phone call away on Mondays and Tuesdays {sometimes}.  But I feel guilty.  Guilty that I'm not with Lil J during the day and watching him hit his milestones.  Guilty that I'm burdening my mother-in-law even though she insists that we're not and gets mad at me when I ask her if she needs a break.  Guilty when I have to call my brother to watch Lil J {and Miss S, if it's summer} in the mornings when we're stuck.  Especially since my brother works the graveyard shift!  Guilty when I have to call my dad to see if he can watch Lil J on his days off.  Just one big guilt-trip.

So now we're looking into daycares that will take Lil J for approximately a month while my mother-in-law goes away on {a much needed} vacation.   Which is super stressful since most daycares won't take kids on a month-to-month basis.  It's got me thinking that it might not be a bad idea for Lil J to be in daycare and be around other kids - even if it's just part-time.  At least my mother-in-law will get a break.

My only fear is that Lil J won't get the attention, care, and love that he gets from his family.  Maybe they'll feed him sweets and junk food.  Maybe they won't change his diapers for hours.  Maybe they might be verbally abusive.  All of those thoughts are swarming around my head constantly.  Honestly, I would leave work today if I could.

So here we go...total mom guilt trip #298476.  It's never ending, isn't it?

my future pop star

I got a phone call from Miss S today telling me that the TV repair guy was at our house.  Then my bro came on the phone and all I heard was this screeching sound so I yelled at him to turn down the TV.  He moved away from the sound and said, "Actually that was Lil J".  Haha! I couldn't help but laugh at my budding musician who sounded like he was breaking some windows with his "singing".  It was deafening.  All kidding aside, Lil J was just using my brother's microphone from his keyboard - his first taste of karaoke!  I'm sure it sounded much better in person.  From my experience, his singing is much more mellow and sweet.

Here's a picture of Lil J showcasing his top 40 single:

{swank}review & giveaway: popchips

CONTEST CLOSED!  Congratulations to #119 - Doreen Riopel!  You've won a month's supply of popchips!!

If you've been following me via Twitter, you will know that I am slightly obsessed with a certain snack otherwise known as popchips.  I can't get enough of the flavour - distinct, addicting and just plain yummy.

The secret to this delicious snack is that popchips are not fried and not baked.  So how do they become a chip?  According to popchips' website, they "take wholesome potatoes, add a little heat and pressure, and pop! It's a chip. The only thing added is a flavorful blend of seasonings for a snack so delicious and crispy, you won't even notice it's {we hesitate to say} healthier."

thanks @popchipsVAN!!

the many flavours of popchips

My good friends at our local popchips office sent me a sample box of the various flavours popchips has to offer:  original, barbeque, sour cream & onion, cheddar, sea salt & vinegar and salt & pepper.  Lil J loved all of them and Miss S was partial to the sea salt & vinegar flavour.

Miss S & Lil J enjoying popchips while watching a movie!

Here's what I thought:

Original:  My overall favourite!  Not too much flavour, not too much salt.  Just right and highly addicting!
Barbeque:  Loaded with the classic barbeque flavour with a little kick.  I'm not a huge barbeque fan but it had just enough flavour.
Sour Cream & Onion:  Very nice with just enough flavour.
Cheddar:  My favourite flavoured popchip!  Not too much cheddar and it will not stain your hands orange.  I can't get enough of cheddar popchips!!
Sea Salt & Vinegar:  Lots of flavour with a tangy, sour vinegar taste.  I found it too strong for my liking but Miss S and Lil J loved them.
Salt & Pepper:  The sleeper favourite.  If you like pepper, you'll love this flavour.  I'm not much of a pepper fan but this one did it for me.  Has a nice spicy kick to it!

drool

Since I am a shopaholic, I'm always thinking ahead to next season and am on the lookout for amazing sales.  Gone are the days where I can wear sky high stilettos on a night out.  Sure, I still do it occasionally but with Lil J running around like a maniac all the time, it's hard to keep up with him in 5 inch heels!

So today I went on a {online} search for the perfect fall/winter boots.  I already have my gorgeous Calvin Klein over-the-knee boots I purchased from Piperlime last year but I need a more practical boot that will go with every outfit.  Something comfty, stylish and warm.

BOOM!

Ugg Bellvue II
I am absolutely drooling over these boots!  For those of you who live on the Westcoast, you know that the weather is unpredictable from day to day.  Plus we get rain.  A lot of it.  Therefore, typical suede Ugg boots are not very practical for this {swank}mama who loves style but won't sacrifice the bank for it.  I might have to splurge for these babies though!  The Ugg Bellvue II's.  I found them while browsing Nordstrom's online store {my guilty pleasure #5726} and they are just...gorgeous.  LOVE how the top part of the boot cuffs over for a different look.  It looks like the black version comes in a cream or black lining.  I kind of prefer the all black look myself.

What do you think?  Have you started shopping for the next season yet?

dear lil j: all grown up

Dear Lil J,

I'm at a lost for words as to how fast you're growing up.  It's a mixture of feelings.  Every time you do something new, I'm just so incredibly proud of you.  But it also makes me sad that you are not a little baby anymore.  And then I think to myself to enjoy every stage of your life and your accomplishments as they come.  They should all be celebrated!  From your first time crawling, to your first steps, your first tooth, to when you lose your first tooth.

Every night before bed, we have a routine.  You take a bath, then eat your last meal of the day - a huge bowl of porridge.  You can't get enough of your porridge!  It's your first and last meal of each day.  Then we say goodnight to your sister and Daddy {and cousins, if they're over} and you trek off to our bedroom with your sippy cup filled with milk.  Yes, you like to fall asleep in our bed because apparently your crib is now scary.  Don't worry.  We just need to get you a mattress and you'll be set in your new big kid bed soon!  You know our routine, and you now understand me when I ask you to do things and you just do it without assistance {"say goodnight to Daddy" or "lets go to the bedroom"}.

You're also talking so much more!  You know a number of letters from the alphabet and you are learning to spell 3-letter words {eg: cat, dog, etc.}.  I notice that you like to talk to yourself a lot while you play with your Nuchi train set.  I guess your vocabulary is expanding rapidly every day!

While I'm writing this post, I'm at work and I just long to be with you.  I can't wait to get home and see your sweet, little face!  Your chubby cheeks are just irresistible!  Until then, I rest assured that you are having the time of your life with Grandma and that being away from Mommy is good for you {you miss me that much more, ha!}.

{swank}review & giveaway: Peek Away Nursing Pillow

CONTEST CLOSED!  Congratulations to #5 Lee-Anne Gin.  Enjoy your Peek Away!

When I was nursing Lil J, nothing would stop me.  Not the time, place or location - as long as my little one was hungry, he would eat.  We were out and about a lot and I noticed that nursing him became very uncomfortable for me {my arms and back would get sore from holding him in a certain position}, and if Mommy was uncomfortable, I can only imagine how Lil J felt.  He took it with a grain of salt but I still felt bad for him.

Fast-forward to present day.  One of my sister-in-laws is currently nursing her 5 month old son and I noticed that she used a cute, stylish pillow with a matching nursing cover.  While inquiring where she got it from, she raved about it and said she doesn't even need a diaper bag anymore.  All of her essentials can fit into the pillow and she was able to use her regular purse for everything else.  Could this be true?  Would this little pillow wonder make diaper bags extinct?  While I can't really answer that question, what I do know is the Peek Away is a fantastic addition that I now incorporate into our everyday lives as a changing pad and diaper & wipes holder for Lil J.

Peek Away was founded by Natalie and Glen who know the benefits of nursing a newborn and strive to make lives easier for new and nursing mothers.  They incorporated a pillow in a variety of stunning designs, with a comfortable foam cushion for baby, and added a built-in wipes compartment and pocket to store diapers together with a matching nursing cover {my Peek Away holds up to four size 5 diapers comfortably - it may have the capacity to hold more diapers depending on the size}.  It's unique folding mechanism allows a 'pocket' to store any extra items {little toys, burp cloths, receiving blankets, Mommy's to-do list, etc.} and can double as a comfortable pillow for older siblings.  Check out Lil J enjoying the Peek Away:

I did find that it was somewhat difficult to get the wipes into the built-in dispenser, as you had to stuff it in through the lid.  This seemed to squish the wipes and prevent it from dispensing properly - when I tried to pull one wipe out, at least five would come out instead.  Perhaps I should have inserted a small amount of wipes at a time but I'm not sure if it would have made much of a difference.  I think a zippered opening of some sort would have helped so that I could slide the wipes into the dispenser without compromising the dispensing mechanism of the wipes.  Also, I believe the fabric is surface wash only.  I would have preferred to be able to throw it in the wash at my convenience, when needed {see below for Peek Away's improved version for Fall 2011!!}.

Since I've been using the Peek Away, I find myself not needing a diaper bag anymore {or a backpack, which Lil J has 'graduated' to}.  I just stuff his toys in my purse along with any other essentials, bring his lunch bag and keep the Peek Away in his stroller.  This makes for more room in my stroller basket for my shopping finds!  Here is what the Peek Away looks like when stuffed with diapers, wipes, and other items:

When unfolded, the Peek Away is still long enough to fit a toddler on it for diaper changes.

The change pad can be wiped clean and is filled with soft foam for comfortable diaper changes {Lil J now has the "time" to lay still during a diaper change.  Must be very comfortable!}, and the diapers and wipes are easily accessible, even when you have a fussy baby or toddler attempting to squirm out of a diaper change.  It takes two seconds to unfold and fold back up again, and I love the fact that Miss S can use the Peek Away as a comfy pillow for herself!

While I didn't get a chance to have my friend {who has a newborn} test out the nursing cover, I tried it on and compared it to my Hooter Hider and found that it worked just the same, if not better!  There is a "window", or built-in wire that you can adjust, so that you can see your baby while nursing and the cover itself is made with a generous amount of material that provides ample coverage so you don't feel like you're going to accidentally "expose" anyone.

I love my Peek Away and know that you will too!  Follow this link to find the closest store that carries the Peek Away or enter to win one in your choice of the four Summer 2011 patterns that Peek Away has to offer!

This Just In!

Peek Away has advised me that they launching a new design for Fall 2011, which will debut in mid-October.  It will be showcased at the ABC Kids Expo in Louisville, Kentucky on September 23 - 26, 2011.  The following are just a few of the updated features:
  •  removable wipes case for ease of refilling wipes & washing of the pillow.  The new wipes case will still have a flip lid portion that will pop through the diaper pad, making it easy for accessing the wipes.
  • a removable nursing strap on the nursing cover.  The nursing strap can be attached to the pillow, transforming it into a chic handbag / purse, or it can be wrapped around your waist while attached to the nursing pillow, making the pillow hands free in case you need both hands while nursing without the worry of the pillow slipping off your lap.
  • more pockets for iPhones, keys, etc.
  • washable foam which will increase the thickness of the pillow by 1 inch, making it more supportive than the current version.

Win It!! {$61.95 US Value}

Please leave a comment below with your email for each entry.  If we cannot verify your email address, another winner will be chosen.  Winner will be picked via random.org.

    relaxed, refreshed and...exhausted!

I'm back after a much needed week-long blogging/social media break.  I spent the week with my family which went far too fast but we had a ton of fun!

The weekend started out with Miss S going to the island with my sister-in-law.  She had an amazing time and was happy to spend it with her aunt and cousins.  The best part:  there was no TV in sight and the kids had to find other ways to entertain themselves.  How their lives almost ended....!

While Miss S had a blast on the island, Daddy G, Lil J and I spent some quality time together with my brother and brother-in-law.  We took an impromptu trip to the mall and ordered take-out pizza.  It's amazing how alike my brother and brother-in-law are despite their ten year age difference.  If you were able to hear their conversations, you'd be in stitches.

Next, we were off to Whistler for four days!  It's our annual summer trip and the kids had a blast!  I will post about our adventures after I upload photos to my computer.

Then it was off to Playland - our local amusement park.  We took five kids with us and, let me tell you, it was exhausting!!  I couldn't wake up this morning!  I honestly don't know how my parents did it when we were younger but I give them major props.

Now, today, it's back to the grind and I know realize how much I dislike the line of work I'm in.  Time for a change.....

    mr. sun has finally arrived!

Summer has FINALLY come for us and we're taking full advantage of the hot, summer weather.  I will be taking a little blogging break this week to spend more family time with Daddy G, Miss S and Lil J {along with my brother and little brother-in-law.  We're off to the beach today and on a mini vacation soon.  I promise to take lots of pictures and share our fun with you.

What are your plans for the rest of the summer?  Going on a plane or doing a 'staycation'?  We're staying local this summer but will venture away from home for a few days!  A much needed vacation for everyone!

    Enjoy!
